BLAKE'S TRAILBLAZERS
On Sunday, April 29th, Doug and I will be taking part in Kennedy Krieger Institute's annual ROAR for Autism bike ride. This is a family friendly event ranging from low mileage ride for kids to a 50 miler for those more advanced. We are passionate about making a difference not only in Blake's life but all those who are affected by autism. We ask you, our friends and family to join us in our cause.
What can you do to help support us?
You can help us break the silence that surrounds autism in two ways:
1. By joining our team, Blake's Trailblazers, for this event or
2. Making a tax-deductible donation in honor of Blake.
Why "Blake's Trailblazers"?
When thinking about naming a team in support of Blake, we found the term "trailblazer" to be an excellent fit. The term trailblazer, meaning leader, pioneer, creator of a route, accurately describe some of the things we want for our son, and things that Blake enjoys.
As leaders or pioneers we are working to pave a path for Blake to enable him to explore new and exciting activities. Blake loves being outdoors and is actively engaged in several outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, running, and swimming. Whether we are hiking through the woods on a weekend backpacking trip, or simply day hiking a local path, Blake enjoys taking the lead. He is actively involved in a cross country/distance running program and is a member of our neighborhood swim team. Blake has participated in a few children's triathlon events where he is able to combine these activities (swim, bike, run) all into one challenging event.
In many ways Blake is a typical fun loving, curious, and mischievous 9 year old boy. Yet his autism spectrum diagnosis presents unique challenges for him and those of us who care for him so much. The path we follow is uncertain and challenging. But we are confident that Blake and all of those who love him will continue to blaze new trails.
We appreciate your support as we participate in this wonderful event. It will be our first of many outings for Blake's Trailblazers. We look forward to having you join us.
