The Hospital Education Liaison Program (HELP) was created after multiple parents of childhood cancer survivors shared their negative experiences of attempting to communicate their child’s unique learning needs during their return to schooling after treatment.  In 2020 we launched our program and provided school liaison supports to patients of the Oncology Follow-up Clinic at Kennedy Krieger.  After great successes in facilitating communication and collaboration between patient’s medical and school teams and increasing patients’ access to equitable educational supports, HELP expanded services to patients of Kennedy Krieger’s Sickle Cell Neurodevelopmental Clinic.  HELP translates medical reports to actionable information for school teams, consults with clinicians about schooling recommendations for patients, assists patients and families in better understanding special education processes, and provides professional learning opportunities to medical providers, medical trainees, educators, school psychologists, families, and patient support groups.  Your donation ensures that we can continue providing HELP services to patients with cancer and sickle cell disease and allows us to continue to expand to other patient populations and regions beyond Maryland.
